The research which we propose here will be carried out in close collaboration with Piet Hut (Institute for Advanced Study and the "founding father" of the Barnes-Hut method), Junichiro Makino (Tokyo Univeristy and the leader of the GRAPE team), together with Dr. P. Teuben (Univ, of Maryland), Prof. S. McMillan (Philadelphia) and Prof. F. Verbunt (UU).The following people from Astrophysics and Computational Science will participate in the project.
Astrophysics Prof. E.P.J. van den Heuvel (promotor) p.m. overall scientific guidance Dr. G.J. Savonije 0.1 f.t.e. advice on stellar and binary evolution Prof. Dr. F. Verbunt (UU) 0.1 f.t.e. Computer Science Prof. Dr. P.M.A. Sloot (promotor) p.m. advise w.r.t. N-body solvers and parallel computing Dr. D. van Albada 0.2 f.t.e. daily guidance computational science aspects Drs. F. van der Linden 0.2 f.t.e. p.m. Dr. P. Spinnatto parallelization of N-body codes 0.2 f.t.e. low level software for DAS and GRAPE, run time support systems Although both groups are physically very close together, thus allowing easy and extensive contacts between the projects members, the project team will have 2 formal meetings per year to manage the project. Because of the special nature of this project we plan to produce a yearly progress report for the VCW. Finally, we plan to organize a second summer workshop in the course of the project.
