Obtaining a residence permit

All foreigners from outside the EU/EEA who come to work in The Netherlands must obtain a residence permit (Vergunning tot Verblijf). In order to be granted such a permit, you must register with the local Aliens Police (Vreemdelingen Politie) within three working days after arrival in The Netherlands.

If you need to do this, please check with the Personel Office first. They will direct you to the university's contact person, who can help with the necessary paper work, and should get you through this process as quickly as possible.

The following items may be asked for when arranging a residence permit:

  1. A valid passport.
  2. An MVV (see Sect. 1.1) if you need one.
  3. A work contract from the university.
  4. Papers showing that you have health insurance.
  5. Two recent colour photographs (passport-size) - but NOT ones from a photo machine where you `do it yourself'!
  6. A rental contract if you have already found accommodation here.

At the end of all this you should have a document proving that you have registered with the Aliens Police. This document is needed to register at the Tax Office.

Do not forget to inform the Aliens Police when you leave The Netherlands. They must also be notified of any change of address while you are staying here.
