SfinxLite WINMAN program

winman is the program that is usually run as the last client from the user's .xsession file. It is used to start up the window manager.

The current system offers users quite some freedom to select which window manager (or session manager) to run. However, not everything can be supported by the computer staff.

Choosing a window manager

You can select the window manager of your choice by setting the environment variable WINMAN in your .cshrc.

TWM family

The Tab Window Manager (TWM) and its relatives are fully supported. A description of the default menu structure is available.

This group includes CTWM, an enhanced version of TWM, which can manage multiple "workspaces" (virtual desktops). But be careful when using this feature; don't open more applications than you can manage yourself... (available on Sun, HP, Linux)

We have also installed TVTWM, another TWM clone with virtual desktop management, but the current version doesn't seem to be stable.

Other window managers

Other choices, which may not always be available, include:

Session managers

Session managers may be started in exactly the same way as window managers. Usually, the session manager starts a window manager as a sub-process.

Avaialble session managers are xsession (Sun, HP, Linux) and xsm (untested !!!, Sun, HP).
