J.A.C. Oudemans (1827 - 1906) was born in the Dutch Indies. He was a highly regarded assistent of Kaiser and later director of Utrecht Observatory. About 20 years of his life he carried out the triangulation of the Dutch colony.
Joan George Erardus Voûte (1879-1963) opened in 1928 a private observatory in Lembang near Bandung, with financial support of Karel Bosscha (tea plantation owner). The equipment was impressive: the main telescope was a 60 cm Zeiss double refractor. The Leiden Observatory at first disregarded this undertaking but later provided support. The son of de Sitter, Aernout de Sitter, became director in 1940. Regrettably he ended his life two years later in Japanese captivity.

Indonesian Houses
There used to be a couple of indonesian houses on the Sterrewachtlaan. Stolen text: 'In 1885 werd een groepje Indonesische huisjes die eerder opgesteld waren op de Koloniale Tentoonstelling in Amsterdam op het terrein van de Sterrenwacht herplaatst, als een soort 'dependance' van 's Rijks Ethnographisch Museum, het huidige Volkenkunde. Sommigen noemen dit het eerste openluchtmuseum ter wereld. In 1903 werden de meeste huisjes vernietigd door een storm.'
