Sfinx software tree

There are movies and movies. Movies as a sequence of images can be created in many of the astronomical image processing packages, but can hardly be played outside the package.

And then there are the various movie formats that can be found everywhere on the World Wide Web:

MPEG
This is a highly compressed movie format. For full-screen replay, special hardware is required, which we don't have. A program called mpeg_play is available to play such a movie in a small window.
Another MPEG player is xmpeg. This one has some control buttons in addition to the display window, allowing to stop, pause and rewind the movie.
Software to create MPEG movies is also availabel and is called mpeg. This program is also able to decompose a movie into separate frames.
FLI / FLC
AVI (Video for Windows)
QuickTime (Apple MacIntosh)
others...
Use xanim to display these. Some of these file types may contain sound as well, so be careful where you play them.
No UNIX software is available to create such movies (yet)...
