SFINX software tree - Image - GIF
GIF ((C) Compuserve) is a image format with built-in compression.
Limitations: 8 bit color.
GIF images are often used on the Wold Wide Web,
since originally, only GIF and X bitmaps were supported.
GIF image manipulation
For Web pages, one often wants to make GIF images interlaced and
transparant for nice effects. This can be done using
giftool.
Or, one can convert a GIF image to one of the PNM
formats, and then use one of the ImageMagic
utilities to modify the image.
Other manipulations, such as colormap changes, can be accomplished with
xv.
Creating GIF images
Some programs include GIF as an output device (e.g.
PGplot), but most often a GIF image is created
by converting from some other image format, using xv
or the ImageMagic tools.
Converting to other image types
Converting GIFs to other image formats can be done by xv
or the ImageMagic tools.
Printing GIF images
The latest version of xv can do it directly. Otherwise,
first convert to PostScript and then print the PostScript
file.
