Sfinx software tree - CD
The following machines are currently equipped with a CD-ROM player:
  - Sun: strw, lithium

- HP: schelde, merwede

- Linux: thames, roer, niers, fluor, argon

- There is one "floating" CD-ROM player for software installation.
This can be connected where ever it is needed. It might often
      be found on vecht.
The public CD-ROM player on strw is located behind the VT100 (console)
keyboard, in the rack in the corner of room 711.
An up-to-date listing of CD-ROM devices can be obtained using
devices cdrom.
Mounting a CD-ROM
To use a CD-ROM, first insert the disk into the device, and then type
  mountcd
to mount the CD. After that, you can access it at /cdrom, just
like you can access any disk or floppy disk.
Or you start up the software that comes with specific CD-ROMs to access the
data on it. Note that some of this software mounts the CD for you, so you can
omit that step.
After you are finished, type
  umountcd
to unmount it, and then either type
  eject cdrom
(Sun only) or press the eject button on the device to eject the CD-ROM.
Available software
The Library committee takes care of most of the CD-ROM
software, and they maintain a
list of currently available CD-ROM titles.
Outside working hours
On the Suns, a program called Workman is available
which can play music CDs (listen to them through the headphone connection,
not the system speakers. On the HPs, a program xcd used to be
available, but it is currently out of order.
On the Linux machines, there is a program called xplaycd
that can do the same thing (note that the volume control only works if
the headphone is connected to the sound card, which most of our Linux
machines don't have at the moment.
However, don't use either of these programs when others might need the CD-ROM.
