Monument
Valley

Monument Valley, the classic image of the Southwest, endless desert interrupted by stark towers of red rock. If you're looking for just that, then there's only one place to go. I am sure you have seen Monument Valley a hundred times in movies and car commercials, and you probably think it is endless. It is impressive but probably not as big and open as you may think. But it is a tourist attraction and well-worth the five dollars. It's on Navajo land and it is a Navajo Tribal Park. A 17-mile dirt-road drive takes you around the major sites, but the most impressive viewpoint is from the visitor's center. Don't miss the hike around one of the buttes, The Left Mitten. This hike is 3+ miles and free (no guide needed) so check it out, you are in the middle of all the buttes.

Approaching Monument Valley. I had a picture (by a professional) of this viewpoint on my desktop for awhile. This is not good enough to use as a desktop image, but it's kind of nice, especially considering that I was driving with one hand and shooting the picture with the other.

The classic viewpoint from the visitor's center. You could drive the whole 17-mile dirt road (in the picture), but this viewpoint is amazing.

Called the Totem Pole. Those things are damn tall!

The view from Artist's Point.

The classic view, toward sunset.

The last light on the three famous buttes, Left Mitten then Right Mitten, and Merrick (or Mitchell) Butte.

Nightfall, looking back on Monument Valley.
