1995-1999 Ph. D. at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge University, UK, supervised by Prof. Richard Ellis. Ph. D. awarded December 1999. Thesis title: "The physical evolution of galaxies".
1992-1994 M. Sc. (Astronomy) at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo, Norway, supervised by Prof. Per Lilje. The thesis was entitled "The formation of high-redshift virialized objects in general cosmologies".

  • I am a member of the Euclid consortium, acting as co-coordinator for the legacy science working groups and co-chairing the working group on galaxy and AGN evolution as well among other things
  • I am a member of the GASS consortium to study the HI content of massive galaxies.
  • I was a member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).
  • I was external collaborator in the VIMOS Very Deep Survey (VVDS) project.
  • I have been a member of the Astronomy Working Group at ESA (2008-2010)
  • I was the Portuguese coordinator for the European ARENA project
  • I was a member of the ESO Working Group 2 for Instrumentation for the European ELT.
  • I was member of the science team for the MOBIE MOS proposed spectrograph for the 30m TMT and on the science team for OPTIMOS-Slit for E-ELT (these are both dormant projects).
Professional experience and skills

Teaching Experience

  • I have devised and teaching a course on Databases & Data mining at MSc level. The course has been taught at CAUP (as an intensive course) and in Leiden as a semester course.
  • I am teaching a MSc level course on galaxy formation in Leiden.
  • I supervising a PhD student, Maryam Shirazi, at Leiden University, starting date 03/2009.
  • I have supervised 8 MSc students at Leiden University 2008-2011.
  • I am currently co-supervising a PhD student, Paula Alexandra Brochado, at CAUP, due to graduate in 2012.
  • I have supervised one MSc student at the University of Porto, Pedro Mondim. He graduated with 19/20 score with defense 04/12/2008.
  • In Leiden I have also supervised one BSc research project (half-year duration).
  • I have also supervised one BIC and one BTI student at CAUP, 2004 &emdash; these are short term (1 year) scholarships to introduce, typically undergraduate, students to astronomical research.
  • I was tutorial teacher, introductory Astronomy course, Oxford University, spring 2000 & 2001.
  • Lecturer, "Graduate Training Course", Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge University, au-tumn 1998, including writing up extensive notes for the students.
  • Arranged and held a course on the use of LATEX and related tools at the Institute of Theoret-ical Astrophysics, University of Oslo 1993 and 1994. This included writing user manuals and "cookbooks" for programs in use at the institute.

Computer skills

I am, or have been!, a proficient programmer in Fortran, Simula, C, IDL and Perl and am familar with Python, Mathematica and C++. I have adequate skills in HTML, CSS, XML, XSL and SQL.

Languages

Fluent in Norwegian (and thereby Swedish and Danish) and English, speak and read decent Portuguese, I speak basic Dutch and read Dutch and German well.

Administrative experience

  • I have been the Portuguese co-ordinator for the pan-European ARENA project.
  • I have been the PI of a grant proposal for extra-galactic astronomy at CAUP, awarded 35 kEUR for three years. This grant included a total of 5 researchers and one PhD student. Grant ID: PTDC/CTE-AST/66147/2006
  • I have also been leader of the astronomical student organization of the University of Oslo
  • I was leader of the Cambridge branch of ANSA (Association of Norwegian Students Abroad) 1997-1998.
