Title: Has PVLAS Detected the Chameleon?
Authors: Ph. Brax, C. van de Bruck, A.-C. Davis
Comments: 4 pages

We show that the PVLAS anomaly can be understood using a chameleon field whose properties depend on the environment. We find that, assuming a runaway bare potential V(phi) and a universal coupling to matter, the chameleon potential is such that the scalar field can act as dark energy. Moreover the chameleon field model is compatible with the CAST results, fifth force experiments and cosmology.

Title: Charting the Landscape of Modified Gravity
Authors: Nemanja Kaloper, Derrick Kiley
Comments: 47 LaTeX pages, 3 .eps figures

We explore brane induced gravity on a 3-brane in six locally flat dimensions. To regulate the short distance singularities in the brane core, we resolve the thin brane by a cylindrical 4-brane, with the geometry of 4D Minkowski $\times$ a circle, which has an axion flux to cancel the vacuum pressure in the compact direction. We discover a large diversity of possible solutions controlled by the axion flux, as governed by its boundary conditions. Hence brane induced gravity models really give rise to a {\it landscape} of vacua, at least semiclassically. For sub-critical tensions, the crossover scale, below which gravity may look 4D, and the effective 4D gravitational coupling are sensitive to vacuum energy. This shows how the vacuum energy problem manifests in brane induced gravity: instead of tuning the 4D curvature, generically one must tune the crossover scale. On the other hand, in the near-critical limit, branes live inside very deep throats which efficiently compactify the angular dimension. In there, 4D gravity first changes to $5D$, and only later to $6D$. The crossover scale saturates at the gravitational see-saw scale, independent of the tension. Using the fields of static loops on a wrapped brane, we check the perturbative description of long range gravity below the crossover scale. In sub-critical cases the scalars are strongly coupled already at the crossover scale even in the vacuum, because the brane bending is turned on by the axion flux. Near the critical limit, linearized perturbation theory remains under control below the crossover scale, and we find that linearized gravity around the vacuum looks like a scalar-tensor theory.

Recently, H{\o}ye, Brevik, Ellingsen and Aarseth (quant-ph/0703174) claimed that the use of the Drude dielectric function leads to zero Casimir entropy at zero temperature in accordance with Nernst's theorem. We demonstrate that their proof is not applicable to metals with perfect crystal lattices having no impurities. Thus there is no any contradiction with previous results in the literature proving that the Drude dielectric function violates the Nernst theorem for the Casimir entropy in the case of perfect crystal lattices. We also indicate mistakes in the coefficients of their asymptotic expressions for metals with impurities.

Title: Cosmography: Extracting the Hubble series from the supernova data
Authors: Celine Cattoen (Victoria University of Wellington), Matt Visser (Victoria University of Wellington)
Comments: 38 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables, uses iopart.cls

We perform a number of inter-related cosmographic fits to the legacy05 and gold06 supernova datasets. We pay particular attention to the influence of both statistical and systematic uncertainties, and also to the extent to which the choice of distance scale and manner of representing the redshift scale affect the cosmological parameters. While the "preponderance of evidence" certainly suggests an accelerating universe, we would argue that (based on the supernova data) this conclusion is not currently supported "beyond reasonable doubt". As part of the analysis we develop two particularly transparent graphical representations of the redshift-distance relation -- representations in which acceleration versus deceleration reduces to the question of whether the graph slopes up or down.
Turning to the details of the cosmographic fits, three issues in particular concern us: First, the fitted value for the deceleration parameter changes significantly depending on whether one performs a chi^2 fit to the luminosity distance, proper motion distance, angular diameter distance, or other suitable distance surrogate. Second, the fitted value for the deceleration parameter changes significantly depending on whether one uses the traditional redshift variable z, or what we shall argue is on theoretical grounds an improved parameterization y=z/(1+z). Third, the published estimates for systematic uncertainties are sufficiently large that they certainly impact on, and to a large extent undermine, the usual purely statistical tests of significance. We conclude that the case for an accelerating universe is considerably less watertight than commonly believed.

Title: Exact Friedmann Solutions in Higher-Order Gravity Theories
Authors: Timothy Clifton

We find the general behaviour of homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models in some fourth-order theories of gravity. Explicit, exact, general solutions are given for both empty universes and those filled with a perfect fluid. For the vacuum case, solutions are found with closed, open and flat geometries, whilst the perfect fluid solutions are all spatially flat. Both early and late-time limits are studied, and attractor behaviour towards simple power-law expansion is identified. Multiple solutions to the same theories, with the same matter content and topology are found. It is shown that these solutions exhibit great variety in their evolution.

Title: Cosmic 21-cm Fluctuations as a Probe of Fundamental Physics
Authors: Matthew Kleban, Kris Sigurdson, Ian Swanson
Comments: 8 pages, 2 figures

Fluctuations in high-redshift cosmic 21-cm radiation provide a new window for observing unconventional effects of high-energy physics in the primordial spectrum of density perturbations. In scenarios for which the initial state prior to inflation is modified at short distances, or for which deviations from scale invariance arise during the course of inflation, the cosmic 21-cm power spectrum can in principle provide more precise measurements of exotic effects on fundamentally different scales than corresponding observations of cosmic microwave background anisotropies.

Title: A new theorem for black holes
Authors: Yuan K. Ha
Comments: Contribution to the XXVI International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, New York, June 26-30, 2006

A new theorem for black holes is established. The mass of a black hole depends on where the observer is. The horizon mass theorem states that for all black holes: neutral, charged or rotating, the horizon mass is always twice the irreducible mass observed at infinity. The horizon mass theorem is crucial for understanding the occurrence of Hawking radiation. Without black hole radiation, the Second Law of Thermodynamics is lost.

Authors: Enrico Barausse, Thomas P. Sotiriou, John C. Miller
Comments: 4 pages, 1 figure

Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are natural matter configurations for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, implying that Palatini f(R) gravity does not give physically acceptable alternatives to General Relativity.

Title: A note on cosmology in a brane model
Authors: Mikhail Z. Iofa

We study some aspects of cosmology in a five-dimensional model with matter, radiation and cosmological constant on the four-dimensional brane(s) and without matter in the bulk. The action of the model does not contain explicit curvature terms on the the brane(s). We obtain solution of the generalized Friedman equation as a function of dimensionless ratio of the scales $b^2 = \frac{\mu M^2_{pl}}{M^3}$ ($\mu$ is the scale in the warp factor in the 5D metric which is taken of order $10^{3\div 4}GeV$, $M\geq\mu$ is the $5D$ fundamental scale). We assume that there is a hierarchy between 4D and 5D scales. For $b^2 =O(1)$ the age of the Universe is found comparable, but below the current experimental value, for $b^2\gg 1$ it is obtained much smaller than the experimental bound. Because time dependence of temperature of the Universe in the 5D model is different from that in the standard cosmology, the abundance of ${}^4$He produced in the primordial nucleosynthesis is obtained about three times more than in the standard cosmology.

Title: String Theory, Space-Time Non-Commutativity and Structure Formation
Authors: Robert Brandenberger (McGill University)
Comments: 12 pages, 2 figures, based on an invited talk at the 21st Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Symposium, Nov. 11 - 16, 2006, to be publ. in the proceedings (Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl.)

A natural consequence of string theory is a non-commutative structure of space-time on microscopic scales. The existence of a minimal length, and a modification of the effective field theory are two consequences of this space-time non-commutativity. I will first explore some consequences of the modifications of the effective field theory for structure formation in the context of an inflationary cosmology. Then, I will explore the possibility that the existence of a minimal length will lead to a structure formation scenario different from inflation. Specifically, I will discuss recent work on string gas cosmology.

Title: Predictions of Alpha Decay Half lives of Heavy and Superheavy Elements
Authors: C. Samanta, P. Roy Chowdhury, D.N. Basu
Comments: 18 pages including 5 figures and 1 table

Theoretical estimates for the lifetimes of several isotopes of heavy elements with Z=102-120 are presented by calculating the quantum mechanical tunneling probability in a WKB framework and using microscopic nucleus-nucleus potential obtained by folding the densities of interacting nuclei with the DDM3Y effective nuclear interaction. The alpha-decay half lives calculated in this formalism using the experimental Q-values are in good agreement over a wide range of experimental data. Half lives are also calculated using Q-values extracted from two mass formulae. The Viola-Seaborg-Sobiczewski (VSS) estimates of alpha-decay half lives with the same Q-values are presented for comparison. The half life calculations are found to be quite sensitive to the choice of Q-values. Comparison with the experimental data delineates the inadequacies of older mass predictions in the domain of heavy and superheavy elements as compared to the newer one by Muntian et al., and highlights necessity of a more accurate mass formula which can predict Q-values with even higher precision.

Title: Modified teleparallel gravity: inflation without inflaton
Authors: Rafael Ferraro, Franco Fiorini
Comments: 4 pages, 2 figures. Version to be published in Physical Review D

Born-Infeld strategy to smooth theories having divergent solutions is applied to teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity. Differing from other theories of modified gravity, modified teleparallelism leads to second order equations, since teleparallel Lagrangian only contains first derivatives of the vierbein. We show that Born-Infeld-modified teleparallelism solves the particle horizon problem in a spatially flat FRW universe by providing an initial exponential expansion without resorting to an inflaton field.

Title: A mathematical analysis of the evolution of perturbations in a modified Chaplygin gas model
Authors: Sandro Silva e Costa, Maximiliano Ujevic, Alesandro Ferreira dos Santos
Comments: revtex, 9 pages

One approach in modern cosmology consists in supposing that dark matter and dark energy are different manifestations of a single `quartessential' fluid. Following such idea, this work presents a study of the evolution of perturbations of density in a flat cosmological model with a modified Chaplygin gas acting as a single component. Our goal is to obtain properties of the model which can be used to distinguish it from another cosmological models which have the same solutions for the general evolution of the scale factor of the universe, without the construction of the power spectrum. Our analytical results, which alone can be used to uniquely characterize the specific model studied in our work, show that the evolution of the density contrast can be seen as composed by a spheroidal wave function. We also present a numerical analysis which clearly indicates as one interesting feature of the model the appearence of peaks in the evolution of the density constrast.

Title: Dark energy, the colored anti-de Sitter vacuum, and LHC phenomenology
Authors: Dejan Stojkovic, Glenn D. Starkman, Reijiro Matsuo
Comments: 4 pages, 1 figure

We study the possibility that the current accelerated expansion of the universe is driven by the vacuum energy density of a colored scalar field which is responsible for a phase transition in which the gauge $SU(3)_c$ symmetry breaks. We show that if we are stuck in a $SU(3)_c$-preserving false vacuum, then $SU(3)_c$ symmetry breaking can be accommodated without violating any experimental QCD bounds or bounds from cosmological observations. Moreover, unless there is an unnatural fine-tuning beyond the usual cosmological constant fine-tuning, the true vacuum state of the universe is anti-de Sitter. The model can likely be tested at the LHC. A possible (though not neccessary) consequence of the model is the existence of fractionally charged massive hadrons. The model can be embedded in supersymmetric theories where massive colored scalar fields appear naturally, thus reopening previously closed regions of SUSY parameter space.

Title: A new PPN parameter to test Chern-Simons gravity
Authors: Stephon Alexander, Nicolas Yunes
Comments: 4 pages, submitted to PRL

We study Chern-Simons (CS) gravity in the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) framework through weak-field solutions of the modified field equations for a perfect fluid source. We discover that CS gravity possesses the same PPN parameters as general relativity, except for the inclusion of a new term, proportional both to the CS coupling parameter and the curl of the PPN vector potentials. This new term encodes the key physical effect of CS gravity in the weak-field limit, leading to a modification of frame dragging and, thus, the Lense-Thirring contribution to gyroscopic precession. We provide a physical interpretation for the new term, as well as an estimate of the size of this effect relative to the general relativistic Lense-Thirring prediction. This correction to frame dragging might be used in experiments, such as Gravity Probe B and lunar ranging, to place bounds on the CS coupling parameter, as well as other intrinsic parameters of string theory.
