Title: Relating RHIC and SPS Heavy Ion Data
Authors: Klaus Werner

We have demonstrated recently that RHIC heavy ion data concerning particle production at small and intermediate transverse momenta become very transparent, if one realizes that there are two sources of particles production: the corona -- due to the interactions of the peripheral nucleons of either nucleus, and the core -- representing the high density central zone. We extend our analysis to SPS heavy ion data. Again, we find that the nontrivial centrality dependence of particle production (being stronger than at RHIC) is simply due to an increasing corona contribution with decreasing centrality. The core contribution shows no centrality dependence (concerning particle ratios), and can be described in exactly the same way as at RHIC, with one exception: there is somewhat less collective radial flow at SPS compared to RHIC. Apart of this (and a trivial volume effect), the core portions produced in different colliding systems at different energies (RHIC, SPS) look the same.

Title: String Cosmology of the D-brane Universe
Authors: Inyong Cho, Eung Jin Chun, Hang Bae Kim, Yoonbai Kim
Comments: 22 pages, 8 figures

We analyze homogeneous anisotropic cosmology driven by the dilaton and the self-interacting ``massive'' antisymmetric tensor field which are indispensable bosonic degrees with the graviton in string theories with D-branes. We found the attractor solutions for this system, which show the overall features of general solutions, and confirmed it through numerical analysis. The dilaton possesses the potential due to the presence of the D-brane and the curvature of extra dimensions. In the presence of the non-vanishing antisymmetric tensor field, the homogeneous universe expands anisotropically while the D-brane term dominates. The isotropy is recovered as the dilaton rolls down and the curvature term dominates. With the stabilizing potential for the dilaton, the isotropy can also be recovered.

Title: Multifragmentation vs. Evaporation vs. Binary-Decay in Fragment Production
Authors: S. G. Mashnik, K. K. Gudima, M. I. Baznat
Comments: 30 pages, 19 figures

This paper presents part of an internal LANL Progress Report on completion of the "S" and "G" versions of the improved Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM03.01) and the Los Alamos Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM.03.01) codes. The "S" versions consider fragmentation of compound nuclei produced after the preequilibrium stage of reactions for excitation energies above 2A MeV using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) by Botvina et al. ("S" stands for SMM), while the "G" versions describe evaporation/fission stages of reactions using the fission-like binary-decay model GEMINI of Charity et al. ("G" stands for GEMINI) instead of using the the Generalized Evaporation Model GEM2 of Furihata incorporated into the standard versions of these codes. We present here an analysis of the recent 660 MeV p + 129I and 3.65 GeV p + 112Sn JINR measurements, of the new COSY data on 1.2 GeV p + (13 nuclei from Al to Th), of the 300 MeV and 1 GeV p + 56Fe data measured at GSI in inverse kinematics, and of the new GSI data on 1 GeV/nucleon 124Xe and 136Xe + Pb. To better understand the mechanisms of fragment production, we discuss several calculated but not-yet-measured kinematic characteristics of products of these reactions, which are predicted to be quite different by SMM, GEMINI, and GEM2. We find these kinematic quantities to be potentially useful in differentiating these reaction mechanisms if they can be measured in future experiments.

Title: General stability criteria for inviscid rotating flow
Authors: Liang Sun
Comments: 3 pages, 1 figure,continues to physics/0512208, physics/0601043
Subj-class: Fluid Dynamics; Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics

The general stability criteria of two-dimensional inviscid rotating flow with angular velocity $\Omega(r)$ are obtained analytically. First, a necessary instability criterion for centrifugal flows is derived as $\xi'(\Omega-\Omega_s)<0$ (or $\xi'/(\Omega-\Omega_s)<0$) somewhere in the flow field, where $\xi'$ is the vortictiy of profile and $\Omega_s$ is the angular velocity at the inflection point $\xi'=0$. Second, a criterion for stability is found as $-(\mu_1+1/r_2)<f(r)=\frac{\xi'}{\Omega-\Omega_s}<0$, where $\mu_1$ is an eigenvalue. The new criteria are the analogues of the theorems for parallel flows. And the criteria for parallel flows can also be derived from those for the rotating flows. All of these criteria are special cases of Arnol'd's nonlinear criteria. These results extend the former theorems and would intrigue future research on the mechanism of hydrodynamic instability.

Title: Implications of Direct Dark Matter Searches for MSSM Higgs Searches at the Tevatron
Authors: Marcela Carena, Dan Hooper, Peter Skands
Comments: 4 pages, 3 figures

Searches for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) Higgs bosons are among the most promising channels for exploring new physics at the Tevatron. In particular, interesting regions of large $\tan \beta$ and small $m_A$ are probed by searches for heavy neutral Higgs bosons, A and H, when they decay to $\tau^+ \tau^-$ and $b\bar{b}$. At the same time, direct searches for dark matter, such as CDMS, attempt to observe neutralino dark matter particles scattering elastically off nuclei. This can occur through t-channel Higgs exchange, which has a large cross section in the case of large $\tan \beta$ and small $m_A$. As a result, there is a natural interplay between the heavy, neutral Higgs searches at the Tevatron and the region of parameter space explored by CDMS. We show that if the lightest neutralino makes up the dark matter of our universe, current limits from CDMS strongly constrain the prospects of heavy, neutral MSSM Higgs discovery at the Tevatron (at 3 sigma with 4 fb^-1 per experiment) unless $|\mu| \gsim$ 400 GeV. The limits of CDMS projected for 2007 will increase this constraint to $|\mu| \gsim$ 800 GeV. On the other hand, if CDMS does observe neutralino dark matter in the near future, it will make the discovery of heavy, neutral MSSM Higgs bosons far more likely at the Tevatron.

Title: On the Hamiltonian Form of Generalized Dirac Equation for Fermions with Two Mass States
Authors: S. I. Kruglov
Comments: 7 pages, invited paper for the Special Issue of Electr. Jour. Theor. Phys. dedicated to Ettore Majorana

Dynamical and non-dynamical components of the 20-component wave function are separated in the generalized Dirac equation of the first order, describing fermions with spin 1/2 and two mass states. After the exclusion of the non-dynamical components, we obtain the Hamiltonian Form of equations. Minimal and non-minimal electromagnetic interactions of particles are considered here.

Title: (De)coupling Limit of DGP
Authors: Gregory Gabadadze, Alberto Iglesias
Comments: 14 pages

We investigate the decoupling limit in the DGP model of gravity by studying its nonlinear equations of motion. We show that, unlike 4D massive gravity, the limiting theory does not reduce to a sigma model of a single scalar field: Non-linear mixing terms of the scalar with a tensor also survive. Because of these terms physics of DGP is different from that of the scalar sigma model. We show that the static spherically-symmetric solution of the scalar model found in hep-th/0404159, is not a solution of the full set of nonlinear equations. As a consequence of this, the interesting result on hidden superluminality uncovered recently in the scalar model in hep-th/0602178, is not applicable to the DGP model of gravity. While the sigma model violates positivity constraints imposed by analyticity and the Froissart bound, the latter cannot be applied here because of the long-range tensor interactions that survive in the decoupling limit. We discuss further the properties of the Schwarzschild solution that exhibits the gravitational mass-screening phenomenon.

Title: Superluminal motion in (semi)classical relativity
Authors: S. Krasnikov
Comments: Pedagogical review. In Russian
Subj-class: General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology; Space Physics

The possibility is discussed of superluminal motion of non-tachyonic (i.e. moving with the instantaneous speed v<c) bodies within general relativity. It is shown that in some occasions quantum field theory apparently prohibits such motion, but not - to all appearance - in the general case.

Title: A Quintessentially Geometric Model
Authors: Burin Gumjudpai, Tapan Naskar, John Ward
Comments: 11 pages, 3 figures

We consider string inspired cosmology on a solitary $D3$-brane moving in the background of a ring of branes located on a circle of radius $R$. The motion of the $D3$-brane transverse to the plane of the ring gives rise to a radion field which can be mapped to a massive non-BPS Born-Infeld type field with a cosh potential. For certain bounds of the brane tension we find an inflationary phase is possible, with the string scale relatively close to the Planck scale. The relevant perturbations and spectral indices are all well within the expected observational bounds. The evolution of the universe eventually comes to be dominated by dark energy, which we show is a late time attractor of the model. However we also find that the equation of state is time dependent, and will lead to late time Quintessence.

Authors: S. BenZvi, S. Westerhoff, J. Ban, W. Sippach
Comments: 11 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Nucl. Instrum. Meth. A
Subj-class: Instrumentation and Detectors

A prototype flash analog-to-digital readout system for cosmic ray detection at energies below 10^18 eV has been designed and tested at Columbia University Nevis Laboratories. The electronics consist of an FADC module that digitizes 16 photomultipliers at 40 MHz with 14-bit dynamic range. The module is read out to a PC (running Linux) through a PCI interface. Taking advantage of the large bandwidth provided by the PCI bus, we have implemented a software-based data acquisition system. This note describes the software and electronics, as well as preliminary tests carried out using a prototype FADC module.

Title: Decaying Gravity
Authors: T. Clifton, John D. Barrow

We consider the possibility of energy being exchanged between the scalar and matter fields in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Such an exchange provides a new mechanism which can drive variations in the gravitational 'constant' G. We find exact solutions for the evolution of spatially flat Friedman-Roberston-Walker cosmologies in this scenario and discuss their behaviour at both early and late times.

Title: A Stringy Correspondence Principle in Cosmology
Authors: S. Kalyana Rama

We study a d-dimensional FRW universe, containing a perfect fluid with p = w \rho and \frac{1} {d - 1} \le w \le 1, and find a correspondence principle similar to that of Horowitz and Polchinski in the black hole case. This principle follows quite generally from thermodynamics and the conservation of energy momentum tensor, and can be stated along similar lines as in the black hole case: ``When the temperature T of the universe becomes of order string scale the universe makes a transition to a stringy phase containing highly excited strings. At the transition, the entropies and energies of these two phases differ by factors of O(1).'' Such a matching is absent for w \ne 1 if the transition is assumed to be when the curvature or the horizon length is of order string scale.

Title: Semi-transparent brane-worlds
Authors: Zoltán Keresztes, Ibolya Képíró, László Á. Gergely
Comments: 15 pages, 8 figures

We study the evolution of a closed Friedmann brane perturbed by the Hawking radiation escaping a bulk black hole. The semi-transparent brane absorbes some of the infalling radiation, the rest being transmitted across the brane to the other bulk region. We characterize the cosmological evolution in terms of the transmission rate $\epsilon$. For small values of $\epsilon $ a critical-like behaviour could be observed, when the acceleration due to radiation pressure and the deceleration induced by the increasing self-gravity of the brane roughly compensate each other, and cosmological evolution is approximately the same as without radiation. Lighter (heavier) branes than those with the critical energy density will recollapse slower (faster). This feature is obstructed at high values of $\epsilon $, where the overall effect of the radiation is to speed-up the recollapse. We determine the maximal value of the transmission rate for which the critical-like behaviour is observed. We also study the effect of transmission on the evolution of different source terms of the Friedmann equation. We conclude that among all semi-transparent branes the slowest recollapse occurs for light branes with total absorption.

Title: Highly Charged Ions in a Dilute Plasma: An Exact Asymptotic Solution Involving Strong Coupling
Authors: Lowell S. Brown, David C. Dooling, Dean L. Preston
Comments: 23 pages, 2 figures. To be published in Physical Review E
Subj-class: Plasma Physics; Mathematical Physics

The ion sphere model introduced long ago by Salpeter is placed in a rigorous theoretical setting. The leading corrections to this model for very highly charged but dilute ions in thermal equilibrium with a weakly coupled, one-component background plasma are explicitly computed, and the subleading corrections shown to be negligibly small. This is done using effective field theory methods advocated by Brown and Yaffe. Thus, corrections to nuclear reaction rates that such highly charged ions may undergo can be computed precisely. Moreover, their contribution to the equation of state can also be computed with precision. Such analytic results for very strong coupling are rarely available, and they can serve as benchmarks for testing computer models in this limit.
