Teaching: Bachelor and Master in Astronomy
Leiden university is proud of its reputation of combining top-quality scientific research with excellent teaching in a wide variety of disciplines, as illustrated on the university website. In astronomy, the Leiden Observatory offers the full range of educational programs leading to (graduate) MSc and Ph.D. degrees as well as to (undergratuate) BSc degrees. Barring the occasional exception, classes in the undergraduate program are taught in Dutch. However, all graduate courses are in English.
Currently, Snellen teaches the first year bachelor course Praktische Sterrenkunde
Before, Snellen taught the third-year bachelor research course, and
the second-year bachelor course on tweedejaars practicum, for which the students travel to the Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma (Spain) for observations, which the students themselves have to plan, conduct, and analyse. In 2007, he taught the interacademic course on Extrasolar Planets & Astrobiology, combined for all Dutch universities. In addition he supervises minor and major master research projects.
