Astronomer by candlelight, by Gerrit Dou (1665) The Astronomer, by Johannes Vermeer (1668)

Astronomy is the oldest science in the world. As an associate professor at Leiden Observatory, I use mostly infrared and submillimetre observations to study the nature of starburst galaxies and the history of cosmic star formation. For more information, see the overview of my research interests, my publication record, or my curriculum vitae.

The Concert, by Johannes Vermeer (1660) North-german harpsichord

For a long time, it seemed that I was not going to be an astronomer but a musician. In the end I decided not to pursue a professional career in music, but after my years of studying harpsichord at the conservatory in Groningen, I still perform regularly, as a soloist or basso continuo player. Since 1999, I am official organist of the organ of the Auditorium of the Academy-building.
